นิทานอุทาหรณ์ต่างจากนิทานคติสอนใจตรงที่นิทานคติสอนใจไม่มีสัตว์ พืช สิ่งของ หรือพลังธรรมชาติเป็นตัวละครที่สามารถพูดคุยหรือแสดงความสามารถอื่น ๆ อย่างมนุษย์ ในทางกลับกัน จะเน้นตัวละครที่เป็นสัตว์พูดได้โดยเฉพาะ
